Lisa Garlands black and white silver gelatin photographs document life
along the North West Coast of Tasmania. The images are mostly
people captured in their personal environment. An environment
that acts as a personal testament to the sitter and the lifestyle they
keep; the interests that dictate their existence. At times a
'backyard' or personal 'object' may accompany a portrait, "It is my aim
to document an experience; an encounter and compress it into a
stillness".
The one-meter square silver gelatin prints do not glamorize her
subjects but rather honor them and their journey. Lisa Garland’s
photographs are a poignant testament to the innate beauty of simplicity
and the hidden grace of everyday life.
Lisa Garland lives and works on the North West coast of Tasmania. She
is a Graduate of The University of Tasmania. Garland was the recipient
of the Moorilla Winter Collection acquisitive award as part of the
Hobart City Art Prize in 2007.
