Jo Chew

The paintings of Hobart-born artist Jo Chew explore ideas of vulnerability and our dependence on structures and others around us. Having created her own language of symbology that she often draws from – missing parts, temporary shelters, three legged dogs and irregular patterns – her work is diverse, colourful and painterly. Jo Chew uses collage, the construction of maquettes influenced by stage design, and collected source images and stories as a starting point for series’ of paintings.
Jo Chew graduated from the Tasmanian School of Art in 2010 with high commendation, she has been represented by Despard since 2011, and now lives and works in Sydney.
