Simon Cuthbert photographs the spaces of the city that contain physical evidence or symbols forgotten, neglected or unrealised dreams. The photographs present stories of the streets through the lens of a deadpan, ‘objective’ camera. He uses bureaucratic vision. The irony is that his photographic subjects come to life, beautifully, hauntingly, charmingly, under this institutionalised gaze.
Cuthbert, began his studies in Photography at the Queensland College of Art in the early 80’s. After relocating to Tasmania, Cuthbert undertook a Bachelor of Fine art followed by an Hons Degree through the University of Tasmania during the 90’s. Since the mid nineties Cuthbert has exhibited throughout Australia in solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in Australia, Japan and the USA.
