Despard Gallery - The Stock Room

The sandstone building at 15 Castray was designed and built in 1837 by John Lee Archer, the ground floor gallery is 250 Sq. meters with a modest ceiling height of 285 cm.

The first floor stock room is a different story, the original wooden floor and beams are exposed with the ceiling height at 420 cm high and a floor area of 450 Sq. meters making the space the largest gallery stockroom in Tasmania and one of the largest in the country.

The space changes frequently with art works coming and going, artist David Nash has a studio in the front corner with plenty of north light, the smell of oil paint and turps create an atmosphere of a working area with the raw architectural features enhancing the experience.

There are may artworks on view with an eclectic mix of Danish modern to contemporary sculpture and large scale paintings are hung that will not fit on the ground floor, we offer private views of the area and can arrange works to be hung in your home on approval.
