Despard Gallery is proud to present Holdfast, solo exhibition by established Tasmanian artist Anne Morrison. In her sixth major exhibition with Despard Gallery, Morrison invites us to share in her ongoing examination into how creative practice can shape and expand our perception of the natural world. Based in Forth on the North-West Coast of Tasmania, Morrison has created a new body of works that draws inspiration from its estuaries and bushland, specifically looking deep beneath its surface to examine the infinite fragments that constitute its rich ecosystems.
Through her work Morrison shares her endless fascination with the complex infrastructure of all living systems, including the biospheres that exist within both microscopic ecosystems and celestial macrocosms. From the studio, all these organic remnants, including the delicate textures of undergrowth, lichens and mosses to tiny seeds, spores and diatoms, are reimagined through paint. Responding intuitively, Morrison allows the natural fluidity of paint to capture a sense of flux, each surface becoming akin to an evolving ecosystem.
Through essentially abstract compositions, Morrison allows us to glimpse the largely unexplored realms of new knowledge, whilst unlocking new perspectives towards how we connect and are bound with the natural world.
