Aisha Sherman-Noth is an emerging artist based in Nipaluna/Hobart, Lutruwita/Tasmania. Through vibrant oil paintings, Sherman-Noth’s practice reflects on the close juxtaposition of built-up urban spaces and the trees and plants that line its roads and buildings.
Contrasting bright colour and painterly gestures against raw linen or seemingly unfinished areas, Sherman-Noth suggests a sense of subtle instability, capturing the restless balance between the manmade and organic. Central to each work is the arterial road of the Brooker Highway, which feeds into city of Nipaluna/Hobart, as well as becoming a central nerve that connects the north and south of the state. Sherman-Noth sees this close alignment of infrastructure and nature as an artificial ecosystem, where life is measured by the relentless hum of the highway and its procession of native and non-native trees. Sherman-Noth suggests its constant sense of movement within each brushstroke, reflecting the dynamic relationships that connect us to nature, even amongst heavily constructed urban environments. Considered through an ecological lens, informed by her studies into environmental sciences, Sherman-Noth sees these fleeting encounters between human and vegetation as part of an environmental system, where all elements are inextricably interconnected.
Through an intuitive approach, Sherman-Noth allows moments of painted spontaneity to transform areas of familiarity and structure into pure abstraction. Here, man-made and natural elements are interpreted without hierarchy, using paint to respond to their shared formal qualities. As such, Sherman-Noth unlocks a new space within landscape painting, allowing us to attune our senses and reconsider our immediate surroundings through a renewed visual awareness. Above all, Sherman-Noth’s work is an invitation to share in her creative excitement and personal fascination towards living matter, captured in a fragile balance between vulnerability and renewed optimism.
Aisha Sherman-Noth graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Fine Art and a Bachelor of Science in 2024. She has participated in numerous group shows since 2022, becoming a finalist in the Henry Jones Art prize in 2024. In 2025, Sherman-Noth become the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Glover Prize.
