Peter Anderson is contemporary ceramic artist currently based in Hobart, Tasmania. Anderson graduated with Honours from the University of Tasmania in 2001, moving to Adelaide the following year to take up a Design Associate position, in the Ceramics Studio at the Jam Factory. He then went on to complete a two-year residency at Clayworks Pottery Supplies in Melbourne. Despard Gallery hosted a major solo exhibition of Anderson’s work in 2006 titled Spatial Constructs, going on complete artist residences in Hungary and then China in 2007.
Anderson’s slab built ceramic sculptures are inspired by the entropy of the landscape and how the constructed environment interacts with the elements of nature. Though bold lines and solid forms, each work echoes the assembled edifices of industrial spaces. However, Anderson’s use of texture and deliberate surface imperfection appears to eat away at the weight and permanence of the ceramic, each form showing signs of decay and immanent deterioration. From this contrast of substance and fragility, Anderson explores notions of deep time, impermanence, human endeavour and the unrelenting power of nature.
Anderson’s work has been selected for many international and national exhibitions including, The Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award, hosted by Shepparton Art Gallery and the International Ceramic Art Award, held at the Gold Coast Art Gallery.
