Sophie Witter is an emerging artist based in Hobart, Tasmania. Her painting based practice focuses on warm and vibrant still life interiors, capturing assemblages of familiar objects, vessels and flora that adorn her studio.
Within each painting Witter embraces an intimate and intuitive process of mark making, guided by the application of paint and colour to captures a moment in time. With an inviting a sense of quietude and reprieve, Witter’s work is both personal, yet accessible and relatable. This is also reflected in her titles, which allude to personal insights and everyday aspects of our daily lives.
These still life’s feature a collection of my pots and vases, with plants and flowers I have picked from around my studio. These objects and plants appear in many of my works creating a sense of place and familiarity. I have used colour and loose and expressive lines to capture the movement of the flowers and the spaces in between them. I use colour as a starting point in my works and then paint intuitively from there. The works draw attention to the process of painting and that it is human, expressive, and imperfect. I am interested in creating a sense of immediacy and intimacy, inviting the viewer to connect with the work and the moment the paint was applied.
