Boundary Lines – Aisha Sherman-Noth

Sherman-Noth was first introduced into the Despard stable as part of our Young Bloods platform in 2025 and has continued to gain national attention, recently having a work acquired by national government collection, Artbank.

Contrasting bright colour and painterly gestures against raw linen or seemingly unfinished areas, Sherman-Noth’s practice reflects on the close juxtaposition of built-up urban spaces and the trees and plants that line its roads and buildings. Central to each work is a sense of subtle instability, capturing the restless balance between the manmade and organic.  Through an intuitive approach, Sherman-Noth allows moments of painted spontaneity to transform areas of familiarity and structure into pure abstraction.  Here, man-made and natural elements are interpreted without hierarchy, using paint to respond to their shared formal qualities.  Considered through an ecological lens, informed by her studies into environmental sciences, Sherman-Noth sees these fleeting encounters between human and vegetation as part of an environmental system, where all elements are inextricably interconnected.

Boundary Lines presents a new suite of paintings that translate collaged scenes of urban spaces around Hobart and surrounding suburbs. Each work considers the roles of objects and spaces in our periphery and how we move through them.
