Despard Gallery would like to congratulate Tasmanian artist Sophie Witter, who has recently been featured in the inaugural issue of Coast Tasmania magazine.
Writer Aissa Reed delves into Witter’s creative world, sharing their intuitive way of working and how the act of painting has become part of a restorative process that provides moments of brief escape. Reed also unpacks the meaning behind Witter’s natural inclination towards still life and the how the most familiar and simple objects can become part of greater narrative of storytelling and making connections.
“Sophie Witter isn’t your archetypal artist. She has little time to splash paint across a cavernous studio. More often, she’s answering a text from one of her four kids, holding a counselling session, mentally calculating dinner, and eyeing a pile of washing growing in the corner. Somewhere in the middle of all that, she paints.”
Coast Tasmania is quarterly magazine that celebrates the people, places and stories that make Tasmania so unique. Each issue is packed with inspiring stories, stunning photography, and the best of Coastal living.
