Despard Gallery would like to congratulate Harrison Bowe, who has been awarded the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Hadley’s Art Prize. The Hadley’s Art Prize Hobart is one of the richest landscape art prizes in Australia, with an acquisitive prize of $100,000. The annual prize is awarded to a contemporary artist for the best portrayal of the Australian landscape. The winner will be announced at the opening of the exhibition finalists’ works at the galleries at Hadley’s Orient Hotel, Hobart, on Friday 21 July. Exhibition runs until 21 September 2025.
His entry titled Of Peaks And Tides draws inspiration from personal expeditions hiking across the mountains of South West of Lutruwita / Tasmania, as well as its rugged costal regions.
‘Of Peaks and Tides is a painterly delineation of a unity between the landscape’s physical form and my perception of place. For a moment, as dawn broke, light spilt over the mountains and set ablaze the earth. A land now aflame, fades into the cold, narrow passage of sea. Earth and water dancing an eternal waltz; my existence granting only a fleeting glimpse of their performance. Beyond the tide’s rhythm, the only changes I witness are the passing of light, weather, and perspective; each revealing new facets of a rugged yet fragile environment.’
Bowe will be holding his third solo exhibition with Despard Gallery in November.
