Despard Gallery is proud to present a joint exhibition by established painters Dale Richards and Simon Blau. Both artists have known each other for 40 years, sharing a studio in Sydney back in the early 1980’s. However, this exhibition marks the first time they have presented work together.
Dale Richards is a painter based in Opossum Bay, Tasmania. His surrealistic and figurative scenes are both compelling and challenging, using oil paint to convey a raw energy across a diverse range of subject matter. Richards work is reminiscent of the social realist artists from the early 20th Century, seamlessly shifting from fanciful to edgy.
Simon Blau is a contemporary painter based in Sydney, with a professional career spanning over thirty years. Blau’s practice acknowledges various roles of paint, including being a record of the artists creative intentions, thoughts and choices, as well as a way to manipulate the material world through processes interpretation and representation. Combining these two styles, Blau recognises painting as a thing the artist does, but also painting as an object in itself.
