Despard Gallery is pleased to share a curated section of recent artworks by some of our favourite artists working in ceramics.
With a growing number of contemporary artists whose practice is focused on this unique medium, we thought we would take the opportunity to put together a collection of works that showcases the diversity of approaches and styles from our artists and celebrate their original contributions to Australian ceramics. Despard Gallery has a long history of exhibiting both mid-century and contemporary ceramic pieces, often presenting joint exhibitions that combine painters and ceramicists together. The resulting mixture of artworks is often dynamic, with aesthetic crossovers between mediums helping to uncover even greater appreciation for the other.
‘I have always been interested in ceramics. Growing up in a family business that sold tableware, glass and jewellery, I recall being drawn to the more unusual pieces, especially with colourful and textured glazes. My first trip to Europe in 1979 had a lasting impact, visiting the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and looking through the many antique shops around Portobello Rd, where I discovered ceramic specialist Richard Dennis, the Michael Pruskin Gallery and Themes and Variations, all very inspirational to an enthusiastic young collector. Examining extraordinary pieces that I had only previously seen in magazines, I built an appreciation for the alchemy involved to create the myriad of glaze effects. Forty years on, I am still drawn to bespoke studio ceramics and since opening Despard Gallery in 1987, I have always presented both two and three dimensional artworks.’ – Steven Joyce, Director
This selection showcases both emerging and established ceramic artists, including recent works by Rosanagh May, Emma Gunn, Zoe Grey, George Kennedy, Jenny Orchard, Kirsty Riddle, Zsolt Faludi and Jeffery Mincham.
