Despard Gallery is proud to announce survey exhibition featuring a curated selection of paintings by Geoff Dyer (1947 – 2020).
Recognised as one of Tasmania’s most illustrious contemporary landscape painters, Dyer forged a national reputation for his immersive oil paintings that captured the complexity and raw beauty that underpins the Tasmanian landscape experience.
His significant artistic achievements reflect thedetermination and passion of a creative visionary, providing an irrefutable contribution to Tasmania’s cultural fabric throughout his fifty-year career. A prolific and strong minded creative, Dyer was constantly developing original approaches to challenge the doctrines of contemporary landscape painting. As such, Dyer’s practice was in constant flux, compositions often moving between abstraction and figuration bycontrasting rich in texture with subtly blended tones and colour. Most distinctive to Dyer’s practice, was his authentic approach, creating visceral interpretations that embodied the essence of place and evoked a powerful response from the viewer.
