George Kennedy – Bay Of Fires Art Prize 2026
Despard Gallery is pleased to share a selection of new a works by early career Tasmanian artist George Kennedy.
Off the back of recently being announced as the winner of the Bay Of Fires Art Prize, as well as being selected as a finalist in this year’s Hadley’s Art Prize, Kennedy has created a new suite of paintings depicting extracts of undisturbed bushland.
Inspired by the fringe areas of the Tasmanian bush that surround his home, Kennedy explores the complexity of these spaces, using transparent layers of colour to depict the shifting of light and how it lines and forms converge. Kennedy depicts the landscape with an empathic fondness, sharing moments of respite and escape from the encroaching urban fringe. Each work highlights the delicacy the landscape, bringing awareness to its fragility and the delicate balance between Tasmania’s natural assets and its urban inhabitants.
Captured within this combination of raw painterly gestures and vivid surfaces are feelings of immediacy and spontaneity, Kennedy responding to a world that is never static and ever changing.
