Despard Gallery is pleased to host a special joint exhibition featuring new works by Tasmanian artists Graham Lang and Sam Wilkinson.
With an eye to promoting the depth of our Tasmanian talent, Despard Gallery has strived to create a space that supports both emerging and established artists in tandem. In doing so, our exhibitions become a way for artists at different phases of their careers can be admired in parallel, their work supporting and inspire the other.
Lang and Wilkinson are artists who can be appreciated in terms of this frame; Lang who has an internationally renowned career that spans four decades, and Wilkinson, who continues to show strong commitment in building his creative footing. Despite these differences, both artists occupy a similar creative space, finding mutual inspiration in the landscape, including how it can shape personal perception and cultural awareness.
Through paint, Lang and Wilkinson both look to distil the landscape down to its barest of elements, condensing it into a state of near abstraction to emphasise its significance. Brought together as an exhibition, the works of Lang and Wilkinson become a powerful reminder of how paint can reveal the many imperceptible layers of the landscape, including how personal experience is part of a broader narrative in understating place and the human condition.
