Despard Gallery is proud to present solo exhibition by contemporary Tasmanian painter Harrison Bowe. In his third solo exhibition, Bowe continues his painterly exploration of the remote wildness that defines Tasmania’s rugged south-west. From Peaks And Tides brings together a new suite of paintings that recall Bowe’s most recent expedition hiking across its mountainous ranges and along its untouched coastline.
Captured within the surface of each work is Bowe’s experience of navigating these terrains firsthand, reflecting on its grandeur and tough conditions. Applied with various palette knives, thick gestures of oil paint trace the contours of the landscape and its rocky topographies, contrasted against immersive gradients of tone and light. Bowe’s unique use of paint captures the underlying temperament of the landscape, seen within the fading threads of light stretching across distant peaks and rhythmic waves slowly eating away at the jagged coastline.
Harrison Bowe graduated from the University of Tasmania, School of Arts and Media in 2020 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In 2023, Bowe was selected for the inaugural RISE exhibition at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston. He was a finalist in the Henry Jones Art Prize in both 2022, as well as 2021, receiving an honourable mention. Bowe was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Hadley’s Art Prize for contemporary landscape painting in 2022, 2024 & then again in 2025, winning the People’s Choice award.
