Joshua Andree

In his second solo exhibition with Despard Gallery, Andree presents a new suite of his ethereal landscape paintings, each delicately executed through subtle brush strokes, soft gradients and a low-key palette. Through multiple layers of transparent washes and glazes, each painting captures the thin threshold where the sky, land and water converge, seemingly caught in a state of perpetual transition through unfolding weather and waning light. Through the lightest of touch, Andree hints at the unseen elements of the Tasmanian landscape, providing a glimpse of its underlying temperament and unmistakeable influence. 

Though his practice, Andree helps shift emphasis away from how the landscape looks, instead to how light and weather shape its experience. This is underpinned by Andree’s intuitive approach to painting, relying on memory and imagination to guide each work. It also points to deepening visual dialogue with abstraction, each composition in delicate equilibrium. Overall, Andree reveals how the landscape and art are not isolated concerns but are in fact closely aligned in helping to guide personal understanding.  As such, Andree invites us to become part this unique dialogue with the landscape, each composition born from a place of deep respect, care and quiet optimism.
