Bay of Fires

28 August – 22 September 2019

Opening Wednesday 28 August 5.30pm

Despard gallery is proud to present, Bay of Fires, a solo exhibition by renowned contemporary artist Ken Johnson.

With a career spanning over 50 years, Ken has exhibited extensively both in Australia and internationally, including recently in Japan and Portugal. Collections include the National Museum of Damascus, Syria, the Presidential Palace in Israel, Bank of America, Newcastle and Tweed Regional Art Galleries and Edith Cowan University.

Ken’s work is characterised by emotive depictions of Australian coastlines and deserts, using an acute eye and deft painterly touch to reveal its subtle beauty. Through the iconic use of insets, Ken reveals nuances of atmospheric change, dimension and time.

“My work is an exploration of a deep and lifelong fascination with elements and relationships between the balance of forms and the transference of light and the mood generated by the ever changing aspects of elements within nature, metaphorically  expressed as a “stage “ using nature as performers.

What draws me to this unique and sumptuous region of the Bay of Fires is how a symbiosis of natural elements interact, creating moods and characters…each individual performance enhancing the éclat of nature at play.” – Ken Johnson 2019
