Despard Gallery is excited to be able to offer a small selection of the highly coveted handmade wooden dolls by Tasmanian artist Mathew Simms.
Aspiring to an ideal pastoral existence, Mathew’s arts and crafts philosophy is a welcomed reflection in today’s modern world, reflecting an artist who is connected to nature through the traditions of the hand made. Simms’ unique arts practice includes a wholistic approach that incorporates painting, wooden furniture making, hand crafted dolls and folk tales.
This selection of handmade dolls, includes some early examples as well as some more recent creations. Each doll has its unique hand stitched dress and articulated legs and arms. Two more recent examples also have articulated knees with wooden joints.
