ARTIST INTERVIEW

Despard Gallery is delighted to present a video highlight for the year, with the latest in our Artist Interview Series featuring Tasmanian painter, craftsman, storyteller and furniture maker, Mathew Simms.

Mathew Simms aspires to an ideal pastoral existence. This humble way of life reflects an artist who is connected to nature through the traditions of craft and the hand made. In a modern era of instant communications and increasing digital dependence, Mathew’s arts and crafts philosophy is a welcomed reflection in today’s mechanised world. His unique practice and approach speak to a simpler time, stemming from a world of folk tales, pastoral repose and contemplation.  For this second solo, Mathew will be presenting a new suite of paintings, alongside hand carved furniture and a new selection of his highly sought-after handmade dolls, including some very early examples from his own collection.
