Despard Gallery is very excited to be hosting Made Of Broken Pieces, solo exhibition by established contemporary Tasmanian artist Patrick Hall.
With a practice spanning four decades, Hall has established an international reputation for his intricate and thought-provoking sculptural works. Characteristic to Hall’s work is an interdisciplinary approach, which stems from studying both printmaking and furniture design at university. This process continues to distinguish Hall from other contemporary artists and furniture makers, with a seamless capacity to combine contrasting disciplines into each work. In doing so, Hall has developed a unique style that retains the essence of the applied arts, with works that are either interactive, functional or even both, along with the thought-provoking depth of contemporary sculpture, incorporating lighting, audio recordings, kinetic elements, found materials together with poetic verse. Making up this remarkable exhibition, his first locally in over eight years, Hall will be presenting a new series of significant wall and floor-based sculptures alongside framed works on paper, all rich in storytelling that capture a sense of curiosity and wonder.
ARTIST INTERVIEW
Despard Gallery is pleased to present the latest video in our Artist Interview Series featuring contemporary Tasmanian sculptor Patrick Hall. Listen to Patrick discuss the concepts that underpin his practice and how drawing from personal narratives has helped his work tackle significant and universal topics. Patrick also reflects on how a craft based approach, by working slowly and methodically with materials, can help unlock their stories and inherent characteristics.
Curious narratives underpin many aspects of Hall’s practice, integrating autobiographical stories with personal reflections and contemporary parables, often ruminating on memory, subjective experience, the passing of time and an erosion of belief. Themes specific to this new body of work include personal reflections on the absent presence of his father, who was a decorated war hero, yet carried the trauma of these wartime experiences, reliving them on a daily basis. Using found photographs, cracked pieces of glass and hand cut paper, Hall’s artworks retell how such stories are handed down as generational memories. These once broken elements, become crucial components, that are remade by Hall to guide us to through the emotional journey of stories being told. As such, stories and everyday objects become transformed by Hall into symbols of both the momentous and the familiar.
