Despard Gallery is please to share three new works which have just entered the stockroom from emerging Tasmanian artist, Sophie Witter.
After their successful inclusion in our Contemporary Tasmanian Women’s group exhibition earlier this year, Witter has created three new still life paintings, capturing her distinctive use of colour and intuitive mark making. Each work presents an assemblage of familiar objects, vessels and flora from her studio, Witter personally inviting us into a space of shared closeness. The surface of each work echo’s the trace of the artist hand, where Witter has worked quickly, trying to capture a moment in time that is both private, yet relatable. This is also reflected in her titles, which allude to personal insights and routine aspects of our everyday daily lives.
The works draw attention to the process of painting and that it is human, expressive, and imperfect. I am interested in creating a sense of immediacy and intimacy, inviting the viewer to connect with the work and the moment the paint was applied.
