Despard Gallery is excited to share a special off-site exhibition featuring new works by established Tasmanian artist, Wayne Brookes.
The exhibition, which continues through to February 2025, features a new suite of Brookes’ intricate still life paintings, which take their inspiration from permanent collection of the Allport Library & Museum Of Fine Arts. The exhibition features seven new works by Brookes, which are installed in relationship with a series of spaces and artefacts that celebrate and contextualise nineteenth-century Neoclassicism.
Through a compulsion to inject detail into every inch of canvas, Brookes shares his infatuation with beautiful things, becoming the master of the ornate and the overlooked. Within each work, Brookes weaves subtle narratives together with rich symbolism, opening up conversations around the opulent, the domestic and the nature of beauty itself. The Allport provides a perfect venue in which to generate a physical encounter between painting and decorative objects – some actual, some contrived – from the Museum’s own splendid collection.
