Despard Gallery is very proud to announce that internationally renowned glass artist Kirstie Rea will be presenting new work as part of our 39th Annual Summer Show.
Kirstie Rea is one of Australia’s most established and celebrated sculptural glass artists. Her practice is based around an ongoing exploration into how we form bonds to place, including how its strengthened though personal experience and memory. Through organic folded forms, Rea’s elegant sculptures echo the twisting shapes and lines found in nature. Reflected in each work is Rea’s own sense of awe, wonder and surprise that she encounters in nature, whilst walking the hills and natural parks around her hometown on the outskirts of Canberra.
From the studio, Rea reflects on the complexity of living systems and how sculpture can help expand awareness of the natural world. Within inherent properties of translucency and light, glass becomes a reflection of being entwined with our environment, a tether which is both fluid and evolving. The medium also becomes a poignant symbol for the tactile, yet often fragile attachments that we all maintain with place and the importance of nurturing connections to the natural world.
