Zoe Grey is an early career artist from lutruwita/Tasmania. Working across fields of painting, as well as drawing, collage and ceramics, Grey’s work explores ideas of home, connection to place and how the landscape is experienced.
Through bold brushstrokes, layering and an intuitive approach, Grey’s distinctive abstracted landscapes, recall the sensations, ambience and textures that define the meaning place. At the heart her practice is a deep connection to Tasmania and its unique wilderness, including the rugged rocks, fierce winds and booming swell of Marrawah, a remote coastal community on the northwest edge of Tasmania, where she grew up.
This work was original exhibited as part of a solo exhibition in 2022, which responded to a month-long residency at the world renowned Arteles Creative Center in Hämeenkyrö, Finland. Overall, the exhibition revealed how painting has become an evolving visual language for Grey, allowing her to push the work and ideas in new directions. This painting demonstrates how place it is not necessarily defined by location, but in how connections are made through experiences of significance, embodying knowledge through the act of painting, answering to the landscape, rather than directly representing it.
