Jonothan McBurnie

Jonathan McBurnie is Sydney-based artist whose work is a collision of high culture and trash iconography. Incorporating referents from art, comics, film and many other sources, McBurnie’s work reconfigures his own life story with fictional histories of superheroes and filmic red-herrings. At once earnest and satirical, McBurnie’s drawings work at different registers, changing depending upon their hang and the conversation between images, varying from deeply personal to cheeky and irreverent. McBurnie has recently submitted his postgraduate thesis at the Sydney College of the Arts, focussing upon drawing, mounting a fake retrospective of this four-year period, exhibiting some 800 works. The artist is known for his disiplined studio practice and prolific output. McBurnie is also the visual arts editor for Sneaky magazine, assistant editor of the Journal of Fashion and Beauty and a regular contributor to Catalogue magazine.
