Todd Jenkins

Endemic

20 November – 15 December 2019

Opening Wednesday 20 November at 5.30pm

Todd Jenkins is a Hobart based artist and Endemic is Todd’s fifth solo exhibition with Despard Gallery. This recent body of work celebrates iconic regions of the Tasmanian landscape, in particular kunanyi, Mount Field and takayna.  Paintings examines the unique topographical features of these highland spaces; including tarns, rivers, marshes, as well as rare deciduous and evergreen flora.  It also reflects on the delicacy of present-day ecosystems through insects, crustaceans and fungi, alongside the remnants of ancient memories carved into stone and ringed within wood through prehistoric watermarks and fossils.

“Through thin layered veils of paint, my work aims to reveal the subtle intricacies that resonate within the Tasmanian landscape, using abstraction to interpret atmospheric changes and represent the passing of time.  Here, shadows float on the surface and hover like dragonflies, and subtle nuances of light transform into colour and pattern.  Submerged in the mystery and intrigue of these landscapes is the essential need for spiritual connection and the impulse for human response. These works reflect my ongoing curiosity towards the Tasmanian landscape and how its unique raw beauty remains rich in spirit and indigenous culture.” –  Todd Jenkins, October 2019

Todd has been exhibiting for over twenty years, and his work is held in important private collections both nationally and internationally.
