Despard is redeveloping its former first level stock room into a new gallery due to be launched in October. In the meantime, we will be previewing some of our 2016 program highlights through a series of pop-up exhibitions. Over the next few weeks we invite you to view a selection of new work by prominent Tasmanian artists: Geoff Dyer, Todd Jenkins and Graham Lang, come and drink, argue, observe and enjoy the company of other art friendly folk throughout July at Despard Gallery.

Geoff is Tasmanian best-known painter. First starting out with watercolour landscapes in the 1970’s, Geoff has moved through the medium to his great passion; oil paint. After winning the Archibald Prize with Richard Flanagan’s portrait in 2004, Geoff’s output has moved from strength to strength. The preview will feature some of Geoff’s stunning large oils including one sensational 183 x 274cm canvas fresh from the studio (Sorry no licking).
“My work is influenced by the power and majesty of the natural world, primarily focused on Tasmanian landscape I aim to capture what is at the heart of the Tasmanian experience. Over the past three decades I have covered many subjects, from the brooding wilds of the West Coast to the ruggerd islands of the Bass Strait. The process of capturing, creating and finishing each work has been refined over years of informal study, overseas residencies, commissions, exhibitions and awards. I believe this experience demonstrates my commitment and loyalty to Tasmania’s cultural life.” Dyer 2015
Geoff will be present to discuss the evolution of his 40 years as a professional painter and what excites him most about his recent work.
