OPENING EVENT – Wednesday 26 July 5:30pm
Despard Gallery is proud to announce a significant exhibition, surveying the paintings of one of Tasmania’s most illustrious contemporary landscape painters the late Geoff Dyer (1947 – 2020).
Throughout his fifty-year career, Dyer forged a national reputation for his immersive oil paintings that captured the complexity and raw beauty that underpins the Tasmanian landscape experience. His significant artistic achievements reflect the determination and passion of a creative visionary, helping to reshape Tasmania’s cultural direction. Dyer was prolific throughout his career, constantly developing original creative approaches to challenge the doctrines of contemporary landscape painting. As such,Dyer’s practice was in constant flux, compositions often moving between abstraction and figuration by contrasting rich in texture with subtly blended tones and colour. Most distinctive to Dyer’s practice, was his authentic approach, creating visceral interpretations that embodied the essence of place and evoked a powerful response from the viewer.
Selected Works From The Artist’s Studio has been carefully curated to reflect the depth of Dyer’s creative repertoire, bringing together signature examples of his favourite spaces and their unique ambience. This includes the heavy blues of Ocean Beach, the dense greens of D’entrecasteaux River and the intense oranges and reds from his Fire Series. Marking the second release from the Dyer Trust, Despard Gallery is honoured to host this important survey of early and recent works, many of which are previously un-exhibited. This includes fourteen major oils, a suite of smaller studies, as well as six framed works on paper.
