Joshua Andree – Personal Geography

Moonah Arts Centre

Despard Gallery is pleased to share an exhibiting featuring Joshua Andree at the Moonah Arts Centre (MAC).

This special off-site exhibition features three new major paintings by Andree, alongside a suite of small studies, all capturing his unique interpretation of the ambience of Tasmanian environment and its oceanic surrounds. Exhibition continues til 5 August 2023.

These paintings are my landscape; the view from my home looking north towards Mt Direction, Gunner’s Quoin, the Quoin Ridge and the subsequent Coal River Valley. It is a remarkable moment in the landscape. Quiet for sure, understated and humble. I grew up looking across the river Derwent to it, and lost hours as a teenager staring out classroom windows contemplating its seeming “otherness”. Now as a slightly bigger kid, I understand it’s connection to the longest unbroken culture on the planet and its custodians, the muwinina who have hunted, cultivated, lived, made and met on this country for millennia.
