Despard Gallery is very proud to announce Joshua Andree has been selected in the Hadley’s Art Prize 2023. Andree’s practice often depicts the coastal regions of lutruwita / Tasmania, using paint to explore the shifting space where the sky, land and sea converge. Delicately executed, each composition evokes the immersive experience that underpins the unique space of our island environment and its oceanic surrounds.
The Hadley’s Art Prize Hobart is one of the richest landscape art prizes in Australia, with an acquisitive prize of $100,000. The annual prize is awarded to a contemporary artist for the best portrayal of the Australian landscape. The prize is sponsored by the owner of Hadley’s Orient Hotel, Don Neil who dreamt up the idea of the prize on the 90th anniversary of the first art exhibition held at Hadley’s Orient Hotel. The Hadley’s Art Prize brings art back to the historic walls of Hadley’s Orient Hotel and celebrates the work of contemporary Australian landscape artists. The prize exposes artists to new audiences and enables emerging artists to be shown alongside established artists.
The winner will be announced at the opening of the exhibition finalists’ works at the galleries at Hadley’s Orient Hotel, Hobart, on Friday 21 July. Exhibition runs from Saturday 22 July – Sunday 20 August 2022.
We are also excited to be exhibiting a new body of work by Andree as part of our Young Bloods exhibition series, opening 31 May.
